We admit it. The fashion industry – and the shoe industry in particular – creates pollution.
We’re fully aware of the problem, and we see it happening every day. We would never claim to be without fault, because nobody is perfect, right? We don’t want to ignore that, nor do we intend to feel overwhelmed by the issue. Our way of taking action is to put helpful things in place gradually, so that we can improve and do a little better every day. For more than 40 years, we have been on the lookout for short- and medium-term solutions that will reduce our environmental impact. Our production methods and means have changed, and we have changed with them; that’s why we channel all our know-how into working hard on improving, day after day.

Each collection requires months of preparation. To create the very best styles, our product team spends a long time researching seasonal trends and designs to build a collection that will live up to – and go beyond – all your expectations in terms of quality, style and price.

Along with our stylist Marco, our partners work on creating the samples for the collection and adjust the designs based on a close working relationship with our suppliers.

Our goal is to provide you with high quality products that you will love to wear, season to season. Most of our designs must therefore go through the demanding stage of fitting and quality control. Each model must exude optimum style as well as be comfortable and resistant.

LEATHER:

leather focus

Leather is a fascinating, noble and changeable material. There are thousands of different types, so the right one must be selected and treated with the utmost care. 76% of our collections is made of leather, because it is resistant, supple and available in a huge range of different sorts. Leather is one of the resources which consumes the most energy, so that is why for eight years now we have been working in association with suppliers who partner almost exclusively with Gold-rated tanneries. These tanneries are committed to reducing the amount of water and energy they consume to produced their leather. To learn more about Gold certification, please click here. We have always worked with leather, but since 2020 we have also been looking into developing alternatives, and have designed our first “100% plant-based” models.

PRINTS

Snake print

Print fabric is the San Marina signature. Two exclusive prints are created each season. Designed in-house by our product teams, the prints echo the main themes of the collection and bring all the models to life. The prints are must-haves for our most loyal customers, and are available on our iconic models season after season.

Contrary to what you might think, shoemaking is still an artisanal craft, and that’s reflected in how the company is organised. Despite having many employees, San Marina has very few management layers, and that encourages people to communicate clearly with each other. Well-being at work is the company’s key focus, and there is a very strong attachment to the product in all of the company’s areas of business. This genuine recognition of value has kept the brand authentic for 40 years.

OUR PROJECTS:

LES CHAUSSETTES ORPHELINES

In August 2021 we started a collaboration with the association Les Chaussettes Orphelines (single socks). This association works with partners, to collect used or single socks, which are then unpicked and transformed into yarn that can be recycled to make new socks, clothes or accessories. We wanted to support this initiative by offering collection points in around a hundred of our stores, where you will also be able to buy the recycled socks that have been created by “Les Chausettes Orphelines”.

SAN MARINA & CO

After celebrating our 40-year anniversary, we wanted to draw on our network of stores and our excellent reputation to share creations by other brands offering original or innovative concepts. The idea? To promote creation and design in the world of footwear and accessories. More information about the project can be found at our Lyon Part Dieu store and on our website!
